Scholastic's Letter to RAF

Yesterday, I removed the RAF eBooks page of RAF which hosted the Animorphs eBooks and halted the eBook Project started over three (3) years ago. This comes on the heels of a very stern letter sent from a lawyer of Scholastic, the publishers of the Animorphs series.

Though Animorphs has long not been published, RAF, they claim, is infringing on their trademark of "Animorphs", and by having the "unauthorized" Animorphs eBooks online, "creates a likelihood of confusion as to the source of origin of the goods and services you provide and is likely to deceive and confuse customers into believing that (you) are owned or endorsed by Scholastic..."

I have therefore removed the eBoooks, and added a note on the website saying we are not affiliated with Scholastic, and replied to this letter in an attempt to remedy the situation.

What is for certain though, is that we will no longer provide eBooks for the Animorphs series or any Scholastic publication. What we will still continue to provide is a great Animorphs community for the few that still enjoy the series.

There is a great possibility that in the next week major changes will have to be made to RAF.

More Changes to RAF Donors

Beginning today, there will be not only two ranks for members who donate, but three.

Here's the new breakdown:

What is Animafia?

If you were wondering how to play, here's a bit more details about our forum's Animafia game.

(Ani)mafia is played by a group of RAFians on either the mafia or the civilian's team - along with a game moderator. Certain members may also be given special roles, such as the medic or the cop.

At the beginning of the game, the moderator gives everybody their roles (via pm), which must be kept secret.  During the night, the mafia  decide who to kill off and the special roles get to perform their abilities. When day breaks, the town can lynch someone they suspect to be mafia by means of voting. The game continues, alternating between night and day, until one side is eliminated.

Best Day EVER on RAF eBooks

Yesterday I tweeted that our Animorphs (Everworld, and Remnants) eBooks section of Richard's Animorphs Forum, aptly titled RAF eBooks was witnessing a surge of users coming from the popular website reddit.com (link to the reddit link). That surge resulted in 75 users being recorded as online on our Forum. This number is a new record; two weeks to the day that 74 members broke the previous record of most users online.

That is only one part of the story. What members were actually flocking were our eBooks pages. Here are the numbers for RAF eBooks yesterday provided by StatCounter:

1. Pageloads: 11,188

2. Unique Visitors: 4,101

3. First Time Visitors: 3,590

4. Returning Visitors: 511

Yesterday, I received an email from the authors of Animorphs, Remnants, and Everworld (just to name a few) updating me, and subsequently the entire forum on the Animorphs re-release and future in the eyes of the publisher: Scholastic. They also want our help!

Here is part of the email:

Katherine and I have some information we'd like to share, and a favor we'd like to ask.

Not sure if you've heard this yet but ANIMORPHS will be re-issued in spring/summer 2011. That is definite and official.

An editor at Scholastic is combing the first two books for outdated references, sending suggested fixes, and asking us to approve. Which we've now done.

Scholastic will re-cover the books using something called a lenticular cover. So far as we know it's just the first 2 books, then I guess they'll wait and see how sales go before issuing more.

Scholastic has asked us to prepare a small video to show at the sales meeting in early August. We realized that the sales people probably don't really know what ANIMORPHS has meant to so many people. So we wondered whether RAF participants might be interested in sending us some brief video clips just saying what ANIMORPHS has meant to them. ...

Where Do Donations Go?

As per a thread that was created in the Staff Lounge; along with outright requests to 'see the books', it seems like persons want to know where their donations are going. Fair enough.

As I have said many times before, RICHARD'S ANIMORPHS FORUM, because we moved from a free, remotely-hosted system, started to become dependent on funds for upkeep.

Here are a list of common expenses:

1. Domains: 7 domains are currently paid for and being run under RAF.

2. Servers: 2 shared servers are used by RAF. Server /host related costs fluctuate. We are charged for backups for instance.

3. Software: RAF from time to time purchases software for users to use, or for development purposes.

4. Advertising: a forum without members is not a forum after all. I use paid services to promote RAF. This is the biggest expense outside of regular expenses.

For definite purposes, here's a list of actual numbers: you can see how each month will fluctuate in income and expenses.

A little something to note. As we get bigger, the bigger the servers will need to be. Next year it is expected that server costs will triple per month.

RAF Staff April 2010 Changes

It's amazing that with four of the best persons suitable for the job of RAF Staff, chosen some years ago, others in the not so distant past, one would reach the point where each of them are on their way out of the staff building. Okay, it's not a building, but rather a very elite club of RAFians who have shown themselves to be dutiful, trustworthy, and dependable.

As most of you are aware, thanks to my position at a 9-5 job, I have become exceptionally busy since March 1, 2010. It's at these crucial times I depend on the persons who I've selected to look after the forum. It is quite unfortunate that we have reached the point where I must blog about the demotion of the entire RAF Staff (Claire, Kevin, Mike, Russell).

When there are no posts or trickling posts in the Staff board it is usually indicative of two things.
1. There isn't anything of worth that the staff must deal with.
2. The staff isn't active in the forum.

I can safely say that #1 is not the case. Why? There are quite a few things that were outstanding. So that leaves us with the dreaded issue of staff inactivity.

At no point should a thread / issue to be dealt with be sitting down for days; unanswered, untended to. This was the case. As a result I feel that it is time to do some re-shuffling. Whoever wants to remain on board with myself heading the team can feel free to do so. I will however, take special interest in how each and every one of the staff members participate and take initiative with regards to the forum and issues relating to it.

As I said on Twitter, if you feel that you can be active each and every day, take initiative and have the interests of Richard's Animorphs Forum at the forefront of your online life; then feel free to send me a message saying you wish to be selected for joining the RAF Staff.
